A story that happens every day in India
"Raju admitted his mother for knee surgery. Room was ₹8,000/day. His policy cap: ₹5,000. The hospital bill was ₹1.8 lakh. His insurer paid ₹90,000. He paid the rest from his savings — wiped out."

This is the proportional deduction trap. When your room rent exceeds the policy cap, insurers scale down every line item — surgery, ICU, anesthesia — not just the room. It's legal. It's buried on page 34. And it ruins families every day.

BimaDecoder finds this trap in your policy before you ever check in.

What we find

The 5 traps hiding in most Indian health policies

High risk

Room Rent Cap

Most policies limit room rent to 1–2% of sum insured per day. Exceeding it triggers proportional deductions on your entire bill — surgery included.

e.g. ₹5,000/day cap → 38% deduction on ₹1.8L bill
High risk

Proportional Deduction

The silent multiplier. Every associated cost — anesthesia, doctor fees, diagnostics — gets cut by the same ratio as your room rent overshoot.

e.g. Room 60% over cap → 60% cut on surgeon fees too
Watch out

PED Waiting Period

Pre-existing diseases like diabetes and hypertension are excluded for 2–4 years. IRDAI caps this at 3 years — your policy may be misquoting it.

e.g. Diabetic claim denied in year 2 → ₹4.2L rejected
Watch out

Specific Disease Exclusions

Cataract, hernia, joint replacements, and sinusitis often have their own separate waiting periods buried in a footnote. Separate from the standard PED clause.

e.g. Cataract surgery: 2-year separate wait on page 38
IRDAI protection

5-Year Moratorium

After 5 continuous years with any insurer, they cannot deny claims citing undisclosed pre-existing diseases. Many families don't know this protection exists.

e.g. 5+ years insured → claim cannot be denied for PED

You "Kya dengue ka ilaaj meri policy mein cover hota hai?"
BimaDecoder Haan, dengue cover hota hai — lekin 30 din ki waiting period ke baad. Aapki policy 15 March 2024 se active hai, isliye aap abhi fully covered hain. Ek baat dhyan rakhein: aapka room rent cap ₹5,000/din hai.
You "Room rent cap ka kya matlab hai?"
BimaDecoder Agar aap ₹5,000 se zyada ka room lete hain, toh company sirf 62% bill cover karegi — surgery fees bhi. Iska matlab aapko pocket se dena pad sakta hai. Hum ek safe room recommend kar sakte hain.
